Some weeks when you look at the pile of new CD's, you doubt if there is anything much there. This week, I found a tasty group from Wyoming called The Two Tracks, and a nice new one from Southern Culture On The Skids called "The Electric Pine Cones". I almost passed over Kiefer Sutherland, but recalled Letterman used to have him on, so I listened to "Down In The Hole". A real surprise. This thing has legs, and is great solid writing and playing. And last, but not least was Austin Bluesman Johnny Nicholas, with Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Cindy Cashdollar and others. Very tasty stuff...including two old blues cheating songs..."Kid Man Blues" which is classic Sleepy John Estes, and a strong version of Willie Dixon's "Backdoor Man". Not quite as much swagger as Morrison, but very, very solid, as you can see here as Nicholas and his band do Backdoor and the title track.
